The Celtic harvest festival is named after the god Lugh or Light. It was associated with the first harvest halfway between the spring and autumn equinox. It involved great celebration and a time of plenty. There were great gatherings that included religious ceremonies, ritual athletic contests. The design represents the sun and lightland was once a tree covered country and like many ancient cultures, there was a respect and reverence for what nature provided. The letters in Ireland's earliest alphabet, Ogham script, were all named after trees. The Oak tree was the most sacred to the druids and was associated with the god Dagda. The druids were believed to worship and practice their rites in oak groves. Doire, the old Irish for oak, is found in many place names, Derry being the most famous City.
