It is the summer of 1945. The war against Hitler is over and the victors have decided that 3 million people of German origin, who were living in Czechoslovakia, must leave that country. This is the story of 2 refugees, a young boy of 12 and his aunt, who have arrived at the Austrian border and are waiting, with many others, for a train to take them to Vienna. This translation of the German novel Reise Gegen Den Wind gives an insight into an aspect of European history about which little is know here in Ireland. It was awarded a prize in the Oireachtas Literary competition 2002.
