An account of Irish customs and their resonance.

The result of five years of study, this book describes Irish traditions observed on specific days of the year and draws mainly on the collection of folklore gathered by schoolchildren in Ireland during the 1930s. From St. Brigid’s Day to Christmas Eve, there isn’t a tradition or superstition that isn’t covered here.

This fascinating collection covers local festivals and patron days as well as the folklore surrounding saints and holy wells. From the viewpoint of folklore and tradition, Irish traditions during the calendar year are a treasure trove.

Conchúr Mag Eacháin was born near the city of Armagh. He earned his BA, MA and PhD in Irish and Celtic Studies at Queen’s University Belfast.

Publications: Téarmaíocht Ghaeilge na hAthbheochana. Main areas of study: the Revival, linguistics, Irish lexicography and folklore.

Former Research Editor, with Fiontar & Scoil na Gaeilge, Dublin City University. Currently Assistant Editor, Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge, The Royal Irish Academy.
