Placenames are an incomparable and irreplaceable part of our heritage on account of the light they throw on the shape of the landscape and the history of human occupation. This major collection from Gleann Cholm Cille, some 2,500 names, each collected from oral memory, together with surviving historical sourcing, is published here for the first time. Each name appears in its authentic Irish form as collected from local informants, along with a definitive interpretation in English and full colour photographs of many of the locations. The resulting volume is not only a source of pride to the local community who preserved such an important and vanishing heritage, but will also be indispensible handbook on the region for the thousands of visitors each year.
